Supporting the Transition to Post-Primary
October 2021
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the final year for your child in primary school! We have lots to do this year with settling into school during these times, covering the sixth class curriculum, preparation for confirmation etc. but we also have to start thinking of the move to Post Primary School.
The transition to Post Primary School involves a lot of changes and new experiences for your child and can make everyone feel a little nervous so we are here to support you with this transition, to give you advice should you need it and help you source the information you need.
September and October are the months when all post primary schools normally have their open nights. The reason for open nights is for a school to showcase exactly what they can offer your child in terms of subject choices, extra-curricular activities. You can meet management and staff, get information on how the school is run and get a tour of the school. Due to Covid 19, this year some schools will be having virtual open nights, some will be directing parents to their websites and Facebook pages or others will have prospectus with information about the schools should you require one.
We have included all the details of the local Post Primary schools on the back of this sheet, we have added in any information we know regarding upcoming virtual open nights, website details and application closing dates.
The most important piece of information is the closing dates for the applications. In the past three years there has been a waiting list in nearly every secondary school on the list. Though not guaranteed, once the application is completed in full and submitted by the closing date it will give the best chance of securing a place.
If you wish for any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us on the numbers below for a chat and some advice on this first step of the transition process for your child.
Thanking you
The HSCL Coordinators
Welcome back to another school year and a very special welcome to the children and parents of Junior Infants and any new families who have joined us this year. I hope you all had an enjoyable summer and are now getting used to the ‘back to school’ routine! We are having a very busy month of September settling again into our pods and bubbles, continuing with washing our hands and using hand sanitiser, catching up with our friends and making new ones.
We are continuing to live through this pandemic but it is great to see all pupils relaxed and enjoying being back in school. Hopefully as we go through this year things will become easier and we will get closer to normality once again.
Just a reminder of the HSCL role which is to help our students get the most out of education by promoting partnership with parents. Everybody works together with the best interests of the children in mind. Remember if for any reason you need to talk to me, please feel free to ring or text me, home visits will be limited but I can arrange to meet you in the community for a chat and a coffee.
We are delighted to be back to being able to offer courses and classes for parents. Due to current circumstances we cannot offer these within the schools however we have sourced venues in the Mountmellick area. We are working closely with Laois Partnership, the MYFRC and LOETB. All courses below will be run in a safe way, adhering to relevant guidelines. Numbers will be limited so if you’re interested in any courses, contact me directly to reserve your place.
